LARMAC has approved several changes intended to reduce the routine use of synthetic pesticides across more of Ladera Ranch’s maintained landscape.

Some areas—including school fields, sports fields, playgrounds and turf—were already being maintained without routine synthetic pesticides. That approach is now expanding to planter areas in neighborhood and pocket parks, paseos, areas beside sidewalks and walkways, clubhouse grounds, and pool and plunge grounds.

Within those designated areas, LARMAC says routine synthetic herbicides and plant-growth regulators will no longer be used. Landscape crews will instead prioritize mechanical, cultural, biological and organic-compatible methods.

LARMAC also temporarily suspended certain synthetic herbicides and plant-growth regulators in slopes and other lower-use areas while alternatives are evaluated. That review will consider effectiveness, labor, cost, appearance, treatment frequency, operating demands and fire-safety requirements.

Rodent and insect management is also part of the conversation. Management has been directed to examine whether some bait stations can be reduced, relocated or concentrated according to documented activity. Alternative insect-management approaches will also be evaluated at selected recreation facilities.

For residents, one of the most useful promised changes is better transparency. LARMAC plans to map the areas being maintained without routine synthetic pesticides and eventually make that information available on LaderaLife. Management will also explore improvements to resident notifications about pesticide applications.

This does not mean Ladera has adopted a completely pesticide-free landscape policy. It is a measured expansion of reduced-use areas while LARMAC continues developing its broader Organic Land Management Plan.

A progress report is expected at the November 11 board meeting, with a revised plan targeted for board consideration by the end of 2026.

For families who spend time in Ladera’s parks, paseos, pools and common spaces, this is a meaningful local development worth following.
