There are communities that decorate for Halloween—and then there is Ladera Ranch.

By the middle of October, ordinary neighborhood walks start turning into evening tours. Front yards fill with cobwebs, skeletons, pumpkins, lighting displays and the occasional scene elaborate enough to stop passing families in their tracks.

The Halloween Home Decorating Contest is a big reason the tradition keeps growing. This year’s contest is scheduled for October 15 through October 28, giving residents nearly two weeks to display their work and neighbors time to explore it.

The fun is not limited to the people competing. Once the participating homes and map are available, families can plan their own route, walk a nearby village or make a full evening of seeing the most creative entries around Ladera.

Then there is the Harvest Festival on October 17. Scheduled from noon to 3 p.m., it brings the community together before Halloween itself arrives. Later in the month, Teen Movie Night and Haunted Maze gives local teens a dedicated evening on October 24.

These events work because Ladera was designed around shared spaces and neighbor interaction. The holiday becomes more than a single night of trick-or-treating—it stretches across front porches, sidewalks, parks and community gathering places.

If you are new to Ladera, the best way to experience it is simple: start walking after sunset once the decorating contest begins. Look for the official interactive map when it becomes available, respect participating homes and their neighbors, supervise younger children, and stay visible around traffic.

And if you are decorating, you do not need the biggest display on the block. A clever theme, a welcoming porch or a few memorable details can be enough to become part of the tradition.

Halloween in Ladera is at its best when it gives neighbors a reason to slow down, step outside and enjoy the community together.
